Lava tubes Matilda

Journal,
I'm back! Really, it's only a few hours later. I'd better explain the situation. We left John's yesterday, and now we're at Undara, camping. Fires are allowed!!!We just went to the lava tubes, and that, journal, is the subject of this entry. after a shortdrive to the boardwalk, we walked until we finally came to our first standing lava tube. It was too unstable to go inside, but we stared into the mouth of the tube and saw the gaping rockfilled cavity that was the lava tube. The rest of it was basically climbing down steep rocky entrance and watching our step so that we didn't fall into the holes that dotted the silt cave floors. It was A-MAZING!!!!

Dinosaurs Matilda

The next posts will be entries from my journal.

Journal,

I'm sitting here on John's couch, writing. We're back from watching Stephen training his dogs. He's an amazing welder and welds brands. My favourite brand was one of a devil for the local football team. He's also a fantastic dog trainer. He's got 10 dogs: Benji, Shell, Jilly, Blondie, Omo, Herbie, Tiger and some others, whose names escape me. We watched the dogs rounding up sheep into a pen. It was incredible. Earlier in the day we went to the Dinosaur Stampede Monument. It was a follow-up from the previous day's dino activities. Maybe I should explain that first.
Yesterday we went on a tour of the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. We were taken into a room, where a series of videos were shown about AAoDM and the dinosaurs themselves: Matilda, Banjo and Elliot. I've recreated one of them to show you: Matilda and Banjo.

MOST PHOTOS OFF THE INTERNET. MANY ARE NOT MINE. PLEASE INFORM OF ANY COPYRIGHT ISSUES AND SHALL DELETE VIDEO.

So now I shall tell you the story.
Matilda:
Scientific name: Diamantinasaurus matildae
Type: Sauropod
Description: A massive, herbivorous sauropod, Matilda was 2.5 metres tall from the hip and 15-18 metres long.
Skeleton: 40% (extremely complete) MOST COMPLETE SAUROPOD IN AUSTRALIA.

Banjo:
Scientific name: Australo venator wintonensis
Type: Theropod
Description: Banjo, a carnivorous monster, was armed with massive claws and stood 1.6 m tall at the hip and 5m long.
Skeleton: 35% (incredibly complete) MOST COMPLETE THEROPOD SKELETON IN AUSTRALIA

The Banjo and Matilda story

Once, around 90,000,000 years ago, there were two dinosaurs: Banjo, a therapod and old Matilda, a sauropod. Matilda had been for a drink at the waterhole, wading into the mud. But Matilda was old and frail, and this time as she sunk into the mud, she couldn't get out. She was stuck and knew she would die. Then Banjo came along, spying the sauropod and hoping for a quick, easy dinner. That dinner cost him his life.  Seeing the predator, Matilda lashed out with her tail, knocking Banjo dead. In this way, their skeletons were found on top of each other millions of years later.

So, just to say, previously I was sitting on the couch, waiting to go to the musical fence and now I'm sitting at the camp table, 2 days later.  Anyhow, the dinosaurs I was talking about earlier was the dinosaur stampede monument. We had another tour, and the audio visual part told us about the stampede:
A herd of ornithopods
A herd of coelurosaurs
And......

ONE MASSIVE, CARNIVOROUS THERAPOD!!

The chase that ensues is the only known evidence of a dinosaur stampede IN THE WORLD!!! So the footprints were unveiled...

The theropod leapt out, taking massive strides towards his prey... but wait! Is his speed increasing? Yes it sure is. He's locked onto prey, and he's kicking up more mud than before. His prey is concentrating on getting to the lush vegetation that was Winton 90,000,000 years ago and changes direction. The predator spins and changes direction himself. It's the classic predator vs. prey. Who will win? And there the fossils end: the mystery still not solved.
So, I was saying something about a musical fence, wasn't I? Well, the musical fence is a unique instrument in the middle of outback QLD. It consists of percussion kits made of everyday household junk and five fence strings which can play different notes. Sadly, the metal poles for playing the fence were missing, but we still had heaps of fun playing on the drum kits.

Dinosaur Museum/ Winton Reuben

Matilda's Bones
We went to a dinosaur museum in Winton. We went on two tours. The first one had dinosaurs which were call Banjo, Elliot and Matilda. We saw the bones and Matilda and Banjo's were found on top of each other. The tour guide showed us some videos. Do you know why the dinosaur was called Elliot? It was because David Elliot found it.
Matilda's Bones
Banjo's Bones
We went on another tour and got to touch fossils.

We went to another dinosaur museum called the dinosaur stampede. It has the only evidence of a dinosaur stampede in the world. We found out some new dinosaur's names:
Coelurosaurus, a chicken-like dinosaur
Ornithopod, which could be as big as an emu
Therapod, a dinosaur which is as big as a horse and whose footprints are as big as a large cassowary.

Seaforth Matilda

After a drive, we set up camp in the Seaforth Camping Ground. There was a playground just down the road from our campsite, but it was infested with green ants and we couldn’t play on the main playground. We did lots of swimming inside the stinger nets and had heaps of fun at the beach catching hermit crabs and then letting them go again.

WHERE?
Seaforth is very close to Mackay.
WHEN?
We stayed there for 6 days, arriving on Wednesday 20 July, 2016.

Cape Hillsborough

We went for a walk at the Cape Hillsborough and had lots of fun on our walk. There were very informative signs which told us about Indigenous Australians and different kinds of ecosystems and biodiversity. The latter posed many deep questions such as:
How might mangrove forests cope with climate change?
What will happen to the forests around you in the future?

We had another adventure at Cape Hillsborough by meeting Mum’s friend Holly and her two daughters Layla and Bridie for a picnic dinner. We had sausages and made friends.

Seaforth Camping Ground

I was playing on the park on our last full day of our stay at Seaforth when a girl called out to me. At the time, I had no idea that she was the sister of Lewis and Reuben’s newest friend. However, she was and when I met her again later, all was revealed. Her name was Ashlia and her brother’s name was Riley. We played together on the playground for a bit, chatting and telling each other about ourselves. We really were friends.
After we had gone back to our separate campsites, we met again and played, along with Riley again. This time, we played a game which involved going down slides backwards and sending Shopkins down the slides for the other person to catch. Afterwards, we went for a swim. I had stinging pains just about everywhere on me, so I left the water early and started to play on the swings.

Slade Point

The day after meeting Holly at Cape Hillsborough, we met Layla, Bridie and Holly again, this time at a beautiful beach called Slade Point. We played touch footy on the sand before retreating to the playground to keep cool. The wonderful morning was topped off by hot chips and calamari for lunch.

Dreamtime Cultural Centre Rockhampton

the Indigenous cultural centre Rockhampton!!!

while we were in Rockhampton we went to a place called the Indigenous cultural centre Rockhampton. Dads friend works there and his name was Bob. we were the first people there so while Mum and Dad talked to Bob we went to watch a  movie. it was all about Torres strait islanders and there doings. soon the visitors came pilling in so we went out.then all of us went on a tour with a man called Wade.we went through the ted Mitchell gallery were he told us a story. this was after the huge rain. then we went to a cave and Wade played the diggeri-doa for a while then we through a Boomerang i through it first but our Dad through it the best. finally a woman called grace talked about the Torres strait islanders.then we had morning tea witch i had 1 kirks can 2 pikelets and 1 scone

Geocaching by Reuben

We went Geocaching  and I swapped a 5c piece for an  interesting shell .
The cache was small .
We did another Geocache and It was well camaflaged .
We are in a hotel at Airlie Beach.
At first I thought it was a cabin then I looked at the what to do book and I saw the word hotel so It was a hotel.  I sleep with my brother (Lewis). We watched the cricket. It was day one of the first test of Australia touring Sri Lanka.  It was on the JAT.  Sri Lanka scored 117 runs and Australia scored 66 /2.  It rained most of the afternoon, Burns scored 3 and Smith and Kawaja made a fifty partnership.

I also went for a geocache at Red Cliff Island while I was camping at Seaforth.  I caught about fifty hermit crabs while I was at Seaforth.  I found a hermit crab that looked like Cranky Crab.  I also saw a lizard that looked like Iggie Iguana!  I was camping at Seaforth for about a week.  We went for a walk to Airlie Beach Lagoon and I had an icy pole and bought some books.  I'm probably going to watch the cricket again today.

*Matilda Special Edition*: The next few days of week 2 in reviews

Review 1 (for day 1)

Southside Holiday Village

The cabin which we stayed in in Rockhampton was pleasant at first, but soon we discovered that it was somewhat unhygenic: a dead frog was found in the pool. I'm not complaining, as much accomodation is rather small, but I had to share a room with both Lewis and Reuben, which, to say the least, didn't go down too well. But it gave us a place to spend the night and there were lots of beds, which were all comfy. Plus, the TV had Foxtel: huge bonus! Overall, if you're looking for a place to spend the night, this is the holiday village for you!

Review 2 (for day 2)

Big4 Discovery Park

The next cabin that we stayed in was like arriving in a luxury hotel. Laughing and joking, we went to the pool to cool down, as we're used to Canberra winters and suddenly finding ourselves in a hot Queensland winter is quite unnerving. Anyhow, The pool was deliciously cool and we all had a great time splashing about. Even before that I had realised another great thing about this cabin: I GOT A ROOM TO MYSELF!!! I was so thrilled! The next day we went to check out the playground. It was disappointingly forlorn so we didn't stay there long. Then we got to have a go at the buggies in return for picking up any rubbish we saw on the way. It was fun, even though I got the hardest buggy to pedal. After our pedal buggy cruise, we check out the games room: another disappointing result. We went back to our comfortable cabin to relax before our next exciting adventure. This is an incredibly luxurious caravan park and I recommend it thoroughly.

Review 3 (for day 3)

Dreamtime Cultural Centre

You know, I'd really like to say that this is more than 4 1/2 stars, but I could only say five out of five, and that would mean 100% perfect. Look at the definition widget I put up. That's impossible. Anyway, back to our experience. Dad took us to the Dreamtime Cultural Centre to see his friend Bob. We ended up watching a presentation on Torres Strait islanders. It told us all about the different islands and about kinship and Torres Strait islander's connection with the sea. Then we went on a tour of the Ted Mitchell gallery with a man named Wayne. It was very informative, and he told us a dreaming story. The moral of the story was "Always listen to your elders". The gallery looked like the Canarvon Gorge. We also learnt about life for Aboriginal people on stations. After that Wayne showed us some didgeridoo playing. He was very good and told us all about the different techniques used to play the didgeridoo. After that, we went to do some boomerang throwing. Wayne showed us how to hold the boomerang and how to flick your wrist when throwing. He made it look so easy, but when it was my turn, I found out that it was really difficult. Then we went to the Torres Strait Islander village to learn all about Torres Strait Islanders. Did you know that the only islands in the Torres Strait not claimed by Captain James Cook are called Saibai and Bedanug? Then we went to have some morning tea with Bob. It was delicious! So, if you're looking for a great place to learn all about Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, check out this website: http://www.dreamtimecentre.com.au/ .

Days 5 - to the end of our stay at Mym and Simon's house Week 1 Matilda

Day five started off very boringly, so I'm just going to skip long, detailed explanations and say: Uncle Lolly and Dad did some fencing while we sat around being bored. To top it all off, there are pictures above. Simple! That's a great solution: dust off the boring parts quickly: time-saving for the reader, AWESOME! :) for the lazy writer.
OK, so next we have mustering the weaners. I'd been looking forward to it all day long. I got onto my horse when we came to a section where there wasn't much more ground to cover. Before this I was on the 4WD. Then I was on Catalina and I was on the lead with Mym.
After that two other children called Ryan and Brooke came over. Neither of them were as old as me, but Brooke and I had a great time together.
SUMMARY:
The next few days were either wet and cold or a repeat of what we'd done previously. Thanks for having me! :)

*Matilda Special Edition* Cazza and Mym Interview

I have interviewed my Grandmother Cazza and Aunt Mym. Here are the results.

    • Do you enjoy living on your farm/property? Why / why not?
Cazza: Yes because I love living on the land and I don’t want to live in the city. I love to take my dog walking and look at the mountains.
Mym: Yes. I love the animals that surround me and I love the work that I do and the open spaces and it’s safe.

    • What do you think of the blog so far?
Cazza: Some of the blog posts are a bit flowery, but apart from that it’s great!
Mym: I thought it was excellent. It’ll be very long by the time you get home.

    • Are you glad that you’re being interviewed for a Matilda Special Edition? Why / why not?
    Cazza: I feel privileged.
Mym: I’m very happy to be interviewed because it gives me an opportunity to share my knowledge.

    • Can you give us an outline of your normal day?
Cazza: I chase my tail for a lot of time (I waste as much time as possible doing nothing). I waft around and achieve very little. I rev myself up to do my aerobic exercises. I love my breakfast. (Truth be told, I often have to have breakfast before I’m revved up enough to do my aerobics.) I say good morning to Pepperpot (my dog) and I throw her two liver treats which she leaps in the air and snaps up. With my coffee I have a quiet time of meditation and prayer in a cosy corner of the couch with my feet on the heater. Faith is an important part of my life. I talk a lot on the phone (I always feel that I have lots of important phone calls to make: keeping in touch with family and friends. I convince myself that these calls are very important because I don’t want to start work.) I may pay some bills, do a bit in the office, put off as much housework as possible and eventually may end up doing one job in one room. I do some work on history of family (which I love). If I’m rostered to work at St. Vincent De Pauls I rush around, put some food in a container to eat on the run, put my badge on and be there by 11:30. By 12:00, people needing help are taking tickets at the waiting room and three volunteer counsellors combine to listen to people’s problems and address them if possible, listening to often tragic stories and helping them with food, clothing, furniture and the like. At 3:00 we hope we’ve seen the last client so I rush out, do a few jobs in town (by now I’m starving, as I haven’t had time to eat very much). Pepperpot is tied up at home to keep her out of mischief and if there’s time, I try to walk her on the hill which is the base of Mother Mountain. I have to try and stop her biting the dairy cows who graze on my paddocks. I love this time. As she bolts past me, I think how lucky I am to live here and the reason I don’t want to move to Brisbane. I love my beautiful farm and my life.
Mym: I run the dogs, then check the cattle and fences and put lick out: do some housework and bookwork and sometimes muster cattle.

    • Which is your favourite duty? Why?
Cazza: Keeping in touch with family and friends.
Mym: Riding my horses because I enjoy the challenge of improving my horse and my performance.

    • Least favourite?
    Cazza: Housework.
    Mym: Bookwork.

    Day 4, Week 1 Matilda

    DAY 1
The next day I awoke at 6:13. I read for a while, and eventually got up. We had to let the weaners out. We hopped onto the 4WD and I drove over the grate until it was time for Mym to take over. She drove us over to the yard and opened the door. The weaners followed her out.
We slowly edged our way along the road and the weaners followed us just as slowly. It was kind of boring, but whenever we tried to go faster, the weaners trotted. It's a bad thing if weaners are trotting, so we quickly slowed again.
    Us on the 4WD
When we got back to the house, we had to go and put lick out for the cattle. We went to get containers, and on the way there I went in the back of the Ute. On the way back I got to go on the motorbike with Uncle Lolly. I was in control of the throttle (sort of)! (He made us go WAY faster than I wanted.)
I rode in the ute to put the lick out for the cattle.
We got back and started our horse riding. It was my first time out of the yard!
Mym and I got on our horses (mine was called Catalina and hers Comedy) and rode out of the yard. I trotted a few times, which was exciting, and even mustered a few cattle!! :)
When we got back I had lunch and then we went out with Jack to a sausage dinner at Hanging Rock.
After a very bumpy ride to Hanging Rock, we arrived and started exploring. These pictures tell it all.
    Posing at hanging rock

Dad and Uncle Lolly cooking our dinner: sausage sandwiches. YUM!

After a long and exciting day, we returned home.

    Days 2 & 3, Week 1 Matilda

We left St. George with high hopes of what was to come. However, those were soon extinguished as the three hour journey began to take it's toll. Finally we stopped in Roma to have some lunch and I think that as we walked through 'Heroes Avenue', my family's interest in bottle trees was kindled. We went back to the car and started up again.
Finally we got to Mym's house and started helping her deposit a bale of hay for the weaners to eat. I ripped of the thick twine that held the bale together and the boys shovelled hay into the buckets from which the cows would eat. Then we walked back to Mym's house. That night there were a lot of hugs and I got presents: a funny animal balloon, a huge lollipop and a Smiggle pencil case. I was thrilled!
I lay down that night to a soft, warm and comfortable bed, sure of the future and happy to be alive.
The next morning we were up bright and early and started the day with a breakfast of eggs and avocado toast. Yum! Then I left (again with my two jumpers) to help Mym with the dogs. The dog's names are Gem, Dash and Cas. Gem is my favourite.
Then we rode the quad bike up to help Mym move horses around. She told us all their names, but the most memorable ones were DotCom, Combination, Ginny and Lady Jane.
After that, we went to put our hats on and jumped up onto the quad bike again. Dad was driving this time, and we rounded up the horses and moved them to a different paddock. It was A-MAZING!!! I loved roaring around the property on the quad bike. On the way back, we climbed a HUGE, steep hill. Eventually we got to the bottle tree at the top. It was so exciting!
Then we got back home and ate a delicious choc-chip cookie. MMM! After that, we mooched around the quad bike until Cazza, Mym and Mum, who were all riding horses to help muster the weaners, were ready.
We hopped back on the quad bike and set off again, opening the gate for the weaners to file through. Soon we got bored though, so Mym said that we could zoom ahead and shut the gate.
As we raced back from our mission, a dangerous thing happened: Dad forgot a bump! The bike lurched and I was lifted an inch into the air before landing heavily on my bottom again. By that time we were nearing another bump, but Dad slowed down as we cautiously cruised over it.
The weaners were up ahead now, and Dad veered of the road onto the grass to let them pass. Mum, Mym and Cazza joined us as we watched the calves file into the distance.
Then I played darts with the boys, had lunch and lounged about in Mym's swinging chair eating my lollipop. YUM!!
After that I had a riding lesson with Mym. I needed to work on shortening the reins. It was so FUN! :)
I went back to the house and made lemonade with Lewis. It was very sour, but when I added more mineral water it became drinkable. We drank it in the chair with another cookie.
After we had eaten dinner and the boys had gone to bed, I had another amazing surprise: our Uncle Simon (we call him Uncle Lolly) had arrived. Sadly, shortly after he came I had to go to bed. Here's hoping to another great day tomorrow!

    Lewis is Awesome

    Lewis is awesome

Hi my name is Lewis ,my sister might have mentioned me (something rude I suspect) ,anyway, we are going around Australia, well most of it anyway, it was a long trip on Wednesday we travelled for 15 hours!!!! well 3 hours of stopping so if you're good at maths you would calculate it to 12 hours. We did 1003 or 4 kilo-meters we stopped at Cowra, Gilgandra, Lightning Ridge and St. George for the night.
See you on my next post
    Lewis

    Day 1, Week 1 Matilda

I'm sitting on the floor of our cabin. We're in St. George in Queensland, at the Pelican Rest Tourist Park.
Yesterday sure was a long day. We were travelling for 15 hours! For about 3 of those, we stopped and ate, went to the toilet and filled up our fuel tank. But still, that's 12 hours in the car! TWELVE HOURS!!!!
I woke at 5:55 am. It was dark, but the lights in the house were on because we needed an early start. I had to drag myself out of bed and pull on the clothes I had prepared the day before: a purple shirt and black tracksuit pants. After that, I shoved two jumpers over my head, put my glasses firmly on my nose and hurried to the kitchen. I packed away my Chromebook (like a laptop but powered by Google Chrome)  and it's charger and rushed back to my room to tidy it and make the bed. OK, fine, I didn't make my bed properly so I had to do it again. Then I sat up all my dolls and stuffed animals on my beanbag, yelled at Lewis because he had knocked them over, opened the curtains, turned off the light and shut the door. Then came the moment we had all been waiting for: we left.
The first hour wasn't too bad, but two hours in, the trip became tiresome. I was exhausted, but luckily we made it to Lightning Ridge, where we planned to camp, by 5:00. Then we heard some shocking news: we couldn't stay at Lightning Ridge because it was too cold, dirty and crowded. So we had spaghetti bolognese from Bruno's Pizza (delicious, by the way: I rate it 7/10) and set off again. This time we watched a movie (Arietty's Secret Life, based on The Borrowers by Mary Norton) and played on the iPad until we got to St. George. By that time, it was 9:00 pm, so we entered the cabin, changed, brushed our teeth and flopped onto bed.
And now it's today! We had porridge for breakfast and took a walk around the campsite. Soon we'll be going to our Aunty Mym's house. I can't wait! (Even if it does mean another three and a half hours in the car.)
